Laos Travel Tips and Hacks

Make sure you have these basic tricks covered before starting your amazing trip in Laos!

Upon covering some things you should know before arriving in Laos, here are some travel tips and hacks as you journey through Laos!

What to bring when traveling to Laos?

Here are some of the essentials we have curated through our experience of living in Laos:

  • Sunscreen
  • Insect Repellent
  • Hat and Sunglasses
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Toilet Paper/tissue
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Umbrella

The sun in Laos is intense, and if you do not want to get sunburned or receive an impact on your pale complexion, make sure to bring all the necessary sun protection tools you have to protect your skin. Make sure to bring an insect repellent or you will be a victim of innumerable mosquitoes.

There may be situations where you do not have toilet papers or clean water to wash your hands so make sure to carry toilet paper/tissue and hand sanitizers. However, most restaurants and stalls do provide a box of tissue on every table.

Looking for transportation? Download Loca

Loca is the only app of its kind in Laos that functions similar to Grab and Uber. For ease of travelling around Vientiane, you can make use of this application. It is ideal for short distances and would be the best when you have a late night out. It is only available in Vientiane as of now.

On the other hand, the most authentic and picturesque way of moving around are the famous tuk-tuk, so don´t miss the chance of enjoying a colorful tuk-tuk trip!

Become a plastic-free traveler: download Refill My Bottle app

Bring your own refillable water bottle and you can refill them at any of the Green Discovery Laos offices (dependent on availability) and other spots.

You can download the app “Refill my Bottle”, which shows all the spots in Laos where you can grab some free or cheap water without having to use plastic bottles.

Hence, we highly encourage you to bring your own refillable water bottle and download this app for convenience, and to save the earth by reducing the use of plastic!

Laos is a place for street food and stalls, so to avoid the commonly used single use plastic cuttlery, bring your own reusable chopsticks, straw, and else!

Have everything set up for your Tourist Visa

Tourists would have to bring all the documents required to get your visa upon arrival. You would have to bring your passport photo, and USD40 to get a visa sticker. Double check to ensure that your passport is still valid for at least 6 months. You would have to fill in a visa application form whilst at the airport, border, or friendship bridge then.

These are some tips and hacks that we believe will be helpful in preparing you for your trip to Laos! Now, with the impact of Covid-19 we must wait to Governments to open borders depending on our location, but it´s a perfect time to start planning your trip!
