Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area

This 4 day trek though the Phou Khao Khouy National Protected Area takes us into mountainous forest with great views from the top. We camp near at the river, in the forest and a village (home-stay) of the Yao ethnic minority. Here we learn about animals, plants, trees and unique culture of the Yao minority in the Long Xan valley north of Phou Khao Khouay.

They have a written language using Chinese characters. and a complex combination of a sacred spiritual doctrine and a Tao doctrine of their ancestors that comes from Chinese influence. It is a mix of magic, Confucianism and history. There is also a belief of animistic spirits that are part of daily life. They believe in seven principal sprits that represent humans, animals, fields, forests, the sky, water and the earth and village. Yao society is strongly patriarchal. The husband and father have the final say.
