Kiat Ngong Elephant Experience

(2 or 3 days trekking, boat and elephant riding, dry season)
Kiat Ngong

Ban Kiat Ngong is an ancient grassy wetland where massive elephants use to feed. The villagers raise cat fishes and work with the elephants in logging. Until now the elephants have been vital to this community. Many people own their elephants. Today, the villagers' main income comes from elephant riding tour and cat fishes farming.Ta Ong

Ban Kiet Ngong has a small mountain, Phou Asa. On this mountain top, there is a temple that was built by the local village volunteers. The Lao word 'Asa' means volunteer. Once a year, like at Boun That Luang in Vientiane in November, people gather to worship at Phou Asa Temple.

Itinerary:
Day 1: Pakse - Ban Phalaibok - Ta Ong

Depart from Pakse, we drive to Ban Phalaibok to meet with a local guide. The trek leads us through the forest to Ta Ong Village. Lunch is served along the trekking trail. We arrive to the village in the late afternoon. After settling down, we can wonder around this traditional ethnic village and later enjoy local food with villagers in the evening. We wake up early in the morning at around 5:00 am to take a short walk in the forest close to the village, there we’ll listen and watch several kinds of birds feeding from the trees and (if we are fortunate) we may have a chance to listen or even to spot the endangered Yellow-cheeked Gibbon.

We then return to the village for breakfast with the villagers at 7:30am and head back to Palaibok through a different trail in the forest. An easy trek to the top of a hill offers an excellent view of the dense forest and valleys of Xe Pian Natural Park. We arrive in Nongpin village, have lunch with the villagers.
