Departing Green Discovery Laos office in Pakse by private minivan for a short drive to the boat landing and embark downstream on a long-tail boat bound for Champassak town. On the way we stop to visit Wat Phou Ngoy, overlooking the Mekong. We continue floating down and enjoy local life along the Mekong River. We have lunch at Champassak. After lunch, we visit UNESCO’s world Heritage Site of Wat Phou. Then we get back to the other side of the Mekong to Ban Moung in order to take an about 2 hours drive to Ban Hat Xay Khoun. There we take a boat through the famous 4000 Islands, where we can see many shore birds among others along the banks. We finally reach Don Khone for check-in at the hotel and enjoy a relaxed cold drink. Test the fresh coconut juice on the island, you will like it! The rest of the day is free time and witnessing the beautiful sunset before dinner is recommended.
Overnight stay at Don Khone (Khounphan G/H)
Early morning we have a short excursion by walking or cycling around the Island to visit the old colonial French bridge and the French built embankment. Enjoy visiting local fishermen at the Mekong. We return to the hotel for breakfast. After that we visit the gorgeous Liphi waterfall and continue to travel about 20 minutes by boat downstream to see one of the world’s rarest mammal species, the Irrawaddy Dolphin.
We spend some time in the boat to relax, watch and photograph the Dolphins. We continue another 30 minutes by boat to Veunkham, where our transport will be waiting to take us to the amazing widest waterfall in Southeast Asia, Khone Phapheng. Lunch will be served at the falls before we return to Pakse. The drive back will take 2½ hours on the same way to Pakse or you may opt for a drop-off at the Lao-Cambodian border.
