Discovery of the Bolaven Plateau /
Ho-Chi-Minh Trail / Southern Ethnic Minorities


(3 day excursion)

This 3 day excursion in and around the Bolaven plateau gives you varied and lasting impressions of its beautiful country side, famous waterfalls, fertile farmlands, high-grade Lao coffee plantations, and hill tribes of the Mon-Khmer ethnic group in southern Laos. It is known for being one of the most heavily bombed areas during the Indo-China war and for being part of the famous Ho-Chi-Minh Trail.


Day 1:

We’ll depart at 8:30 a.m. from the Green Discovery Laos office in Pakse and drive up to the Bolaven Plateau and later to the Tad Phaseuam waterfall. We enjoy an easy trek around villages of ethnic minorities like Laven, Alak, Taoy and others. We then continue to travel to the Tad Lo waterfall where we stop for lunch. After lunch we drive to Ban Thatang through banana and coffee plantations and head east towards Sekong, the administrative capital of Sekong province. We will stop at some ethnic minority villages and a local market, and continue our way to Attapeu province. The night we spend in Attapeu town.

Day 2:
Today we explore the ancient town and beautiful countryside of Attapeu, where we will come across many different people of ethnic minorities like the Aluk, Laven, Katang, Nge, Taoy etc. Some elderly of these people still have their faces tattooed and wear big earrings. We stop for lunch again in the town of Attapeu. In the late afternoon we drive about 35 km off-road to Moung Xansay to visit the Boom Museum, and drive along the Ho-Chi-Minh trail to visit the ancient temple of King Xaysettha beforere turning to town for overnight.

Day 3:

After breakfast we make our way back to Sekong province to see the beautiful Bolaven plateau at Tad Katamtok waterfall. We then continue on our way to Paksong and have a stop-over in Ban Ka Toth village to visit a coffee fair trade farmers’ co-op. We observe the processing of the coffee beans from planting to roasting to the final product in your cup. This town and district capital is located right the center of the plateau and we explore the town’s lively market. We will have lunch at the Tad Ngeuang waterfall. After lunch we travel to Tad Fane waterfall and taste some Lao tea or coffee along the way back to Pakse.
