These two days of trekking with an overnight stay in a Khmu village offer a good opportunity for gaining insight into the rural life of the local villagers.

Apart from trekking across rice paddies and cultivated land, you will experience the natural beauty of Luang Prabang Province, culminating in the Tad Kuang Xi - Laos' most famous waterfall.

Option 1: One day tour

Itinerary:
Luang Prabang - Long Lao - Kuang Si Waterfall - Luang Prabang
We depart from Green Discovery Laos in Luang Prabang. After 1 hour drive into the hills, west of Luang Prabang, the trek starts with a visit of the Khmu village of Ban Longlao Nung. Close by lies the Hmong village Ban Longlao Song. You can observe the life styles of these two culturally very different minority groups. Despite these differences, the villagers work together and share the same school.

From this rural setting, the trail leads passing rice fields and vegetable gardens before reaching the forested mountains with some steeper parts. A cave is explored on the way, which during the Second Indochina War, served as a bomb shelter for the villagers living in this valley.

One more hour of trekking takes you to the crystal clear water of just one of the springs that feed the Kuang Xi waterfall: a beautiful pool full of big sacred fish. After descending from the top of the waterfall, a Lao style lunch is served its lush setting.

The afternoon is spent bathing and relaxing by the turquoise pools below. See the bear sanctuary just by the entrance gate.

Before you return to Luang Prabang, we take a walk to nearby Khmu village, Ban Thapene that lies around some of the most beautiful pools of Tad Kuang Xi.

Option 2: Two day tour

Itinerary:
Day 1: Luang Prabang – Ban Nong Haeo – Ban Long Lao
We depart from Green Discovery Laos in Luang Prabang towards the southwest. After a drive, the trekking starts at a Lao Loum village situated in the mountain range along the Mekong. The trail ascends into areas with re-growth forests and passes through several valleys, before arriving in at the Khmu village of Ban Nong Haeo.

The trek continues to two villages inhabited by Khmu and Hmong people. These people are your hosts for the night in bamboo house Khmu style. In a home-stay, you will experience the life styles of two culturally very different ethnic minority groups. These people work together in the field and share the same school.

Day 2: Long Lao - Kuang Si Waterfall - Luang Prabang 4 hours

The afternoon is spent bathing and relaxing by the turquoise pools below. Make sure, you visit Phet, the orphaned tiger and a young bear living just by the entrance gate. Also walk around nearby Ban Thapene, a Khmu village that lies nestled around some of the most beautiful pools of Tad Kuang Xi. We return to Luang Prabang by Tuk Tuk.
